THE POTENTIAL TO REGENERATE DAMAGED LIMBS AND hearts seems the subject of science fiction, but newts and zebrafish do it all the time. What can scientists learn from these simple creatures? Why have mammals not retained this remarkably useful property in the course of evolution? Can an evolutionary perspective on the mechanisms used by “lowly” organisms inform the approach to human tissue regen...

Medicine and evolutionary biology have crossed path several times since the publication of On the Origins of Species but the “new science of Darwinian medicine” dates back only to the early 1990s (Nesse & Williams, 1994). For psychiatrist Randolph Nesse and evolutionary biologist George C. Williams, the founders of Darwinian medicine, “there is no branch of medicine that cannot benefit substant...

Evolutionary theory predicts that once an individual reaches an age of sufficiently low Darwinian fitness, (s)he will have reduced chances of keeping cancerous lesions in check. While we clearly need to better understand the emergence of precursor states and early malignancies as well as their mitigation by the microenvironment and tissue architecture, we argue that lifestyle changes and preven...

Since Randy Nesse’s and George Williams’ (1991) seminal article developing a paradigm for Evolutionary Medicine (EM) the field has been expanding rapidly, although the number of books focused on the general topic still number less than ten. One of the earliest problems recognized by Nesse and Williams was the need to convince clinicians that this emerging field was relevant to their sphere of w...

the origins of the current epidemics of obesity, diabetes, and autoimmune diseases, and answering patients’ questions about aging. Evolution is not an alternative to existing medical training and research. It is a useful basic science that poses new medical questions, contributing to research while also improving practice. We now present some significant evolutionary insights into medical issue...
